Topic 7: Data curation preservation issues (Budgets, Costs, Staffing and Skills) Figure 1: depicts a single staff working on preserving data created by many researchers 1.0 Introduction Hello bloggers! Today we also embark on our journey of unpacking the data curation preservation issues. This blog post will focus on the following data curation preservation issues: Budgets, Costs, Staffing and Skills. 1.1 Budget Constraints Johnston et al. (2018  argue that in adequate financial resources remain one of the most significant obstacles to current digital preservation. To understand this assumption,   Ahmad et al. (2025) , conducted a study on funding constraints for digital preservation in memory institutions globally. The study was inspired by systematic review guided by PRISMA framework. The reviewed studies affirmed that memory institutions around the globe are confronted with a lack of dedicated funding for digital preservation. The data reported here appe...

Topic 6:  Data curation preservation issues(Organisational Issues) 1.0 Introduction Digital preservation is the active management of digital information over time to ensure its accessibility ( Edward & Heather, 2017 ) . Preservation of digital information is widely considered to require more constant, and ongoing attention than preservation of other media.  Almost everybody that produces digital information and has an interest in preserving it for a certain period faces issues on how this can be achieved ( Masenya & Ngulube, 2019 ) . These issues ranges from rapidly changing formats, standards and technologies to organisational issues. This blog unpacks the organisational issues related to the preservation of digital contents. 1.1   Organisational issues in digital data preservation Several scholars have lamented various organisational issues in digital data preservation.   The following are some of the issues. 1.1.1 Absence of Legislation, Policies, ...

Topic 5: Data curation preservation issues (threats to digital materials) Figure 1: Data curation lifecycle 1.0 Introduction In my previous post I cited    Tenopir, et al. (2020) , who argued   that research data is valuable asserts as both public and private grant funding agencies are requiring that data from funded research be made publicly accessible.   This demands that data should be properly collected, appraised/selected, organised and stored. However, data collected and preserved in digital form face a number of threats. In today’s blog post I will talk of data curation preservation issues more especially threats to digital materials.   1.1 Data curation and digital preservation Data curation refers to the active management and preservation of digital assets to ensure that they remain accessible, understandable, and reusable over time (Jeffery, 2020) . Data curation involves the systematic process of creating, maintaining, organisi...

Topic 4: Using and Reusing data   Figure 1: Depicts data use and reuse Nowadays, data use and reuse are essential for managing information, driving digital research, and guiding evidence-based decisions (Borgman, 2015). Researchers create data using different methods during the research lifecycle. Bote & Termens (2019), argue that researchers can generate data by any type of electronical object, such as sensors, mobile phones, smart meters, laboratory tools, voice interviews and electronic surveys, or manually. Generated data are used for primary research and published in papers or research reports. The same data can also be used for secondary research to answer new research questions, validate previous findings or indeed to apply in a different discipline. This blog will discuss ‘using and reusing data’. Corbun and Turner (2011), define using data as the processing of primary data by an individual or team for the purposes of a project. For instance, solving a specif...
